I BELIEVE in the inability to really understand the position of the oppressed from the oppressor’s perspective. For me, science fiction is a way I could talk about the relationship between indigenous people and settlers by inverting the power dynamic. So I created a narrative of aliens coming to Earth to extract natural resources. Each edition contains a fictional alien government ‘report’ and two samples sealed in glass ampoules: a pure laboratory sample of one of the 17 rare earth elements and a sample of air I collected in the Canadian Arctic from the northernmost settlement on Earth.”

Artist Charles Stankievech curated by influential art critic Sarah Milroy

Sarah milroy portrait
What excites me about Charles is that he's making work that alerts us on how to understand the world we live in. His work is like the artistic equivalent of watching Citizenfour: it's information we need to know about the way we behave and the implications of that.”
