“THIS PIECE was part of an outdoor installation I did in Marfa, Texas, which is a peculiar place. On the surface, it’s an art tourism destination because of Donald Judd’s museum, but behind the scenes, it’s a military town where Homeland Security is the main employer and part of a long military history: guns were smuggled across the border during the Mexican revolution, and then during WWII, the original museum building interned German prisoners. I also installed a bug zapper inside of a gallery, in front of one of the windows. All the bugs are attracted to the ultraviolet light, but they can’t get in, and if they do, they’ll be vaporized at any moment. I wanted to comment on the American Dream and Homeland Security. The hilarious thing is that when a bug is zapped, blood and guts can be sprayed up to two meters away. It’s possibly causing more of a problem than it’s solving.”
