“One day, I saw this tree that was behind a fence and someone had posted a sign ‘Do not feed the trees.’ I thought it was the funniest thing. At the same time, I was doing a lot of research on 19th-century human zoos, where Ota Benga, the Hottentot Venus and Native people were displayed like animals. Natives were supposed to be dying off at the time, so there was this big thing around the surviving Indian, the last real Indian.”
